About the Intercultural Competence Inventory (IDI) Assessment
The Intercultural Development Inventory® (IDI®) is the premier cross-cultural assessment of intercultural competence that is used by thousands of individuals and organizations to build intercultural competence to achieve international and domestic diversity and inclusion goals and outcomes. So, what is this thing called Intercultural Competence and why is it important to understand?
The WHAT – intercultural competence is the bridge to move from just embracing diversity to an environment of inclusion. It’s the HOW on making the mix of focusing on the “impact” of differences (diversity) and the mix of feeling valued and engaged (inclusion) work together. Diversity PLUS Intercultural Competence = INCLUSION.
The WHY – the development of intercultural competence involves gaining a more complex understanding of how one engages cultural diversity by gaining a deeper cultural self-understanding and a deeper cultural other-understanding. It’s a great way to uncover some unconscious biases that may exist within you.
In contrast to many “personal characteristic” instruments, the IDI is a cross-culturally valid, reliable, and generalizable measure of intercultural competence along the validated intercultural development continuum (adapted, based on IDI research, from the DMIS theory developed by Milton Bennett). Further, the IDI has been demonstrated, through research, to have high predictive validity to both bottom-line cross-cultural outcomes in organizations and intercultural goal accomplishments in education.
